About

EMDR Grieving Reconnection Integration & Enrichment Framework (EMDR-GRIEF)

What You’ll Learn

  • What is grief, why it hurts so much, and what to expect when working with bereaved clients.

  • Phase 1 intake considerations related to grief and mourning across the spectrum.

  • Phase 2 insights, such as psychological first aid and EMDR readiness.

  • Phase 3-8 target selection to process all layers of the grieving experience.

  • How to integrate potential after-death communication (ADC) experiences.

  • Practice the EMDR-GRIEF protocol throughout.

This approach to grief work aligns with the AIP model and explores foundational grief theories. While honouring the natural emotional processes of mourning, EMDR-GRIEF is designed to offer compassionate support and address grief targets effectively.

About the Training

Grief is a universal experience that manifests in diverse ways across all phases of the grieving process. Its complexity can leave us uncertain about how to respond, and health professionals often receive limited training in addressing its nuanced nature.

Tailored for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) trained clinicians, the EMDR-Grieving Reconnection Integration & Enrichment Framework (EMDR-GRIEF©) is an advanced EMDRIA-accredited training. It equips participants with lectures, case examples, hands-on activities, and evidence-based techniques to ensure ethical and effective practice. EMDR-GRIEF is designed to address all forms of grief—whether acute or complicated—and is applicable at any phase of the grieving process. Recognizing grief as an ongoing and evolving process, EMDR-GRIEF provides holistic care tailored to each client’s unique needs.

EMDR-GRIEF helps clinicians support clients in reducing the risk of trauma and complicated mourning, resolving complicated grief, and fostering adaptive grieving. Through this work, clients are empowered to process their loss and rebuild an adaptive internal representation of their world and relationships. It incorporates foundational grief theories, evidence-based EMDR techniques, and innovative strategies to comprehensively address the multifaceted impacts of grief, ensuring alignment with the core principles of EMDR therapy. It is designed to support all types of grief at every phase of the grieving process. By viewing grief as an evolving experience, EMDR-GRIEF addresses complex emotional layers tied to loss in the past, present, and future. Through EMDR-GRIEF, clients can achieve resilience, resolution, and reconnection.

Although reference to loss of a loved one is commonly used as examples throughout this manual, concepts of EMDR-GRIEF can be applied to other forms of loss. The Enrichment phase however is intended to enrich adaptive grieving after the loss of a loved one.

While EMDR-GRIEF as a complete protocol has not undergone formal clinical trials, it is grounded in well-established grief and trauma interventions, integrating components from researched EMDR models and other leading trauma and grief researchers. The protocol has been applied in clinical settings with positive outcomes, but further research is needed to determine its efficacy across different populations.
